Antique & Rare Woods

W. Godziemba-Maliszewski
Maître Ébéniste ~ Master Cabinetmaker

London Joiners Ltd., expert cabinetmakers, have in stock woods and timbers of the highest virtue, truly rare, and often in wide boards. We will not sell boards to other makers, but only offer our stock to those who will commission works from us. W. Godziemba-Maliszewski, master cabinetmaker and maitre ebeniste, is a recognized expert. We are the sole remaining repository of boards from the legendary tortoise shell and quilted mahogany tree that was discovered in 1981. Besides the examples show below, we have many boards of antique Chestnut and Oak. We also have sequence-sawn boards from a rare Black Walnut tree that grew near the ocean in Southport Connecticut. In addition, we maintain a stock of smaller pieces of wood for restoration work, including English Yew, Brown Oak, French Walnut, Huali, Hedge, Nigerian Ebony, and dozens of other varieties. Our main page contains details of all of our services, inclusive of conservation and restoration, new cabinetmaking, and other areas of interest.

Quilted mahogany

Fig. 1 - 2 -3
French Polished examples of the legendary Mahogany tree discovered by Bob Novak in 1981. When polished finely the wood refracts light almost as though looking at a hologram. The chatoyant quality is amazing, as though one may look deeply into the wood beyond the surface. We still have many wide book-matched boards in stock, in several varieties of grain pattern, including tortoise shell, quilted, and quilted and curly. All of the wide boards are suitable for dining tables or boardroom tables. One enormous board that is two and a quarter inches thick by forty two inches wide, and thirteen feet long, may, someday, be laser sawn through the bole, producing a book-matched table seven feet wide by thirteen feet long. We have smaller pieces suitable for boxes of distinction, small tables, or other furniture designs.

Koa Varigated Fiddle

French Polished examples of Curly Koa from Hawaii. Most of Hawaii was clear-cut in the 19th century and what Koa of distinction remained was on either church or municipal property. London Joiners Ltd. bought such a tree several years ago by amazing good fortune. The ordinary Koa that is otherwise available does not compare with what we have. In stock are many sequence-sawn boards that will result in perfectly matched table or other surfaces. The wood has a very sharp chatoyant quality when polished.
